The 1Rebel Story

1Rebel was founded in 2014 by James Balfour and Giles Dean in the belief that the fitness industry at the time was “broken and in need of disruption”. He set out to create a per-session pay-as-you-go model that created fitness experiences that felt more like events, than fitness classes.

1Rebel quickly established itself as one of London’s most exciting fitness brands, with superstar coaches and ‘Prosecco Fridays’, where a glass of bubbly would be waiting for you after your evening session.

1Rebel initially offered a boxing concept called Rumble, a treadmill and floor strength work concept called Reshape and a cycling class, Ride. They have since added Reformer, a pilates-inspired workout, as well as Rig, a strength training concept. A personal training service, Rebel Labs, is also available at select branches.

International expansion has seen 1Rebel launch locations in Saudi Arabia, Israel, UAE and Australia.

How Did 1Rebel Oxford Circus Score Overall?

The full client experience at 1Rebel - Oxford Circus was excellent, achieving The Fit Guide Award Of Excellence.

The Class Experience was good and has received The Fit Guide Recommended rating.

The Highlights

The lavender scent and bold industrial design gave the club a distinctive personality that stood out from the moment we walked in.

The branded app’s “My Rebel Stats” feature added a fun, motivational element to tracking our workouts.

What Our Evaluator Had To Say

“I loved that you could order a smoothie on the screen in the corridor and pick it up after class. Super easy.”

“The lighting effects in the studio made the workout feel like an event, not just another class.”

“As soon as I walked in, the lavender scent hit me. It was quite calming!”

What To Expect From A 1Rebel Rumble Session

1Rebel’s ‘Rumble’ concept blends water bag boxing with HIIT and strength work on their infamous Rebel Bench.

During the 45-minute session, you can expect jab, cross, hook and uppercut combos combined with fast footwork for the boxing component. Bodyweight exercises such as burpees and squats coupled with dumbbell strength exercises on the Rebel Bench complete the workout.

Rumble is available at Oxford Circus and Broadgate in Liverpool Street.

The Reception Service

The phone enquiry was answered quickly and politely, with clear information about classes and pricing.

Upon arrival, we were greeted promptly, and registration went smoothly. However, the engagement felt a bit minimal, with no acknowledgement that it was our first visit. There was no unprompted orientation or additional guidance, so we had to ask for information about the layout and facilities.

After class, the experience remained friendly but lacked enthusiasm. No effort was made to check how we felt about the session or to encourage us to book again. While we did receive information about membership and packages when asked, there wasn’t an attempt to personalize the conversation or guide us toward the best options for our needs.

The Class Experience

The Class Experience has received The Fit Guide Recommended rating.

The class had great energy from the start, with a perfect mix of encouragement and freedom to work at our own pace. The coach gave a warm welcome and provided a solid induction for first-timers, explaining the equipment and class structure clearly. While the vibe was motivating, a few exercises weren’t fully demonstrated, leaving us occasionally glancing at others for guidance.

Once the session began, it flowed smoothly and felt well-paced, with regressions offered and reminders to work at our own level. There was plenty of encouragement, but more individualized coaching and technique corrections could’ve made the experience even better. A few moments of confusion around stations suggested that a little more direction would’ve made the class sharper.

The coach ended on an upbeat note that left everyone smiling. While there was no personal follow-up after class, the overall tone was fun and inclusive, making it a rewarding experience.

The Equipment And Studio

The training area at 1Rebel Oxford Circus was spotless and well-maintained, creating a strong first impression. All equipment, from the Technogym cardio machines to the Bulldog Gear strength pieces, was in great condition.

The layout was easy to navigate, with everything neatly arranged and enough room for everyone to train comfortably. Lighting effects during the class added to the atmosphere, and the powerful sound system kept our energy levels high throughout.

The Facilities And Public Areas

The public spaces at 1Rebel Oxford Circus made a bold and memorable impact. From the moment we arrived, the scent of lavender created a calm, spa-like contrast to the club’s high-energy vibe. The industrial design, such as exposed brick, bold signage, and wood accents, was very on-brand.

Every area felt clean and well-maintained from the corridors to the locker rooms. Complimentary workout and shower towels were neatly presented, and locker facilities had coded locks and hangers provided. The smoothie and coffee bar was another highlight, offering pre- and post-class drinks alongside healthy snacks.

While seating in the waiting area was limited, meaning some of us had to stand in the corridor, the overall experience was thoughtfully designed.

Digital And Technology

1Rebel Oxford Circus impressed with a sleek and professional digital presence that carried the brand’s rebellious energy online. The website was easy to navigate, visually striking, and packed with clear information, from class schedules to workout descriptions. We found booking a session simple, with a smooth payment process and immediate confirmation, and helpful details like arrival times for first-timers.

Social media pages reflected the same high-energy aesthetic and were updated regularly, offering a strong sense of the experience inside the club. While they didn’t include class schedules directly on social channels, the look and tone were on point.

The branded app was a standout, not just for bookings but for its “My Rebel Stats” feature, which tracked sessions, calories burned, and hours trained.
